What is zumba?
Zumba is an energetic form of dance fitness where you move to Latin American music. The classes often feel more like a party than exercise: you follow rhythmic dance moves, step to the beat, and train your whole body at the same time. Because the movements are easy to adapt, anyone can participate—young, old, beginner, or advanced.

How did dancehall originate?
Dancehall originated in Jamaica's so-called “dance halls,” where local sound systems played music and people gathered to dance. Initially, it was a lighter and more direct form of reggae, focused on dancing and partying.
In the 1980s, dancehall evolved further: DJs (also known as “toasters”) became more important than traditional singers, and the music took on digital rhythms. This led to the emergence of the subgenre “ragga,” which has a faster, more electronic sound. Dancehall has continued to adapt to new music styles over the years and now has a global influence, from Jamaica to Europe and North America.
The music & dance
Dancehall music often revolves around so-called “riddims” — instrumental rhythms to which different artists sing or rap their own songs. The lyrics vary from party and fun to social issues.
Dancehall dancing is powerful and expressive. It revolves around isolations, flow, rhythm, and personal style. Dancers are given the freedom to interpret movements and show their personality. Dancehall is therefore not only a physical activity, but also a form of self-expression and culture.

The Origins of zumba
Zumba originated in Colombia in the 1990s. Its creator, Alberto “Beto” Pérez, taught aerobics classes. One day, he forgot his usual music and used his own Latin music, such as salsa and merengue, instead. He improvised movements that matched the music, and his students were immediately enthusiastic.
That spontaneous idea grew into a complete fitness program. Around 2001, Beto moved to the United States, where Zumba quickly became popular. Within a few years, it became known worldwide and official Zumba schools, instructors, and even special variants such as Zumba Kids, Zumba Gold, and Aqua Zumba emerged.
What does a Zumba class look like?
A typical class starts with a short warm-up. This is followed by a series of dance combinations to different songs. Some are fast and intense, others are more relaxed. The movements come from dance styles such as salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, and samba. You don't have to do it perfectly—it's all about participating, moving, and having fun.
At the end of the class, there is usually a cool-down and stretching to relax your muscles.
