What is hip hop?
Hip hop is an urban dance style. It is danced to hip hop music. The dance style originated in the 1970s. It became popular through various dance groups in America. This style emphasizes improvisation, rhythm, and self-expression.
Hip hop is a dance that is connected to the broader hip hop culture, including rap music, graffiti, and street art. It is about expressing yourself and sharing your own story.
Hip hop is viewed differently from other dances because it originated as âfreestyle.â Dancers come up with the moves and choreography on the spot.
There are also battles, where dancers or dance groups compete against each other. Nowadays, this is often done with a pre-planned choreography, but sometimes it can still be freestyled during The Same But Different (SBD), which is an international hip-hop dance platform. The editions are in Rotterdam, Stockholm, and London.
The SBD is known for its battle format, which focuses on cyphers, a circle of dancers, rappers, and/or other artists who take turns showing off their dance skills, usually in an improvisational, non-competitive atmosphere. This edition is all about hip hop, with a battle that brings together the talent, passion, and styles of the dancers.

How did hip hop dance style originate?
It all started in the 1970s in the disadvantaged neighborhoods of Brooklyn and The Bronx in New York, where mainly African Americans and Latinos lived. They organized street parties to help young people forget their problems. The young people danced and became inspired by footwork.
Hip hop is still evolving and forms the basis of various sub-styles of dance:
-
Popping
By relaxing your muscles, you can create the effect that your body is âpoppingâ. This can make movements appear jerky. -
Locking
In this style, you hold your dance movement for a moment, âlockingâ, and then continue dancing. Exaggerated movements of the arms and hands are used. -
Waving
The dancer pretends that something is moving through his or her body, a kind of electric shock. -
Breakdance
This dance mainly involves dancing with the hands and feet. Acrobatic movements are also often used, such as turning your head or doing handstands. -
Waacking
This style plays with your personality, emotions, and facial expressions. It involves throwing your arms in the air, passing them behind your back, and then bringing them back to the front. -
Krumping
This is an aggressive style. It involves powerful movements around your body and stomping hard on the ground. It almost looks like a fight.
